As a a parent I always look for ways to get my children interested in history. Walking tours led by historical characters are always educational, but not always fun for kids.
Since a young age my daughter loves everything gory. My son however does not. So when I had a chance to be in Quebec City with only my horror-loving daughter we decided to take the animated guided tour “Crimes in New France” by Les Promenades Fantômes.
What is the Animated Tour “Crimes in New France”?
This 90-minute walking tour is led by the king’s daughter, Marie Rivière, who came to New France to build a better life. Sadly she ended up marrying Jean Rattier, a future Quebec executioner.
As you walk the darkened streets of Quebec City you discover the wretched crimes, arrests and executions that shaped the city. You really get a sense of life in founding times and the atmosphere that rules inside the city walls.
The knowledgeable ‘Marie’ will inform you on the founding characters gossip and historical tidbits. Did you know there is a difference between how the English and French hang prisoners? One uses a short rope for a swift death. The other leaves it longer so the prisoner will dangle and suffer. Can you guess which?
Even though it was daily life in New France, I was worried about some of the content of adultery, sexual diseases, crimes, etc.. Our guide was great and made sure my daughter wasn’t permanently scarred by what she heard and all the adults didn’t miss out on the fun.
The tour group meets in front of the Morrin Centre (44, Chaussée des Écossais street) and ends at scenic Place Royale where you can find the oldest stone church in North America (1688), Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church. You truly do get to see some beautiful views and historical landmarks on the walk.
Tips Before you Go
This tour is popular all year around, but more so in the fall. Quebec City can be cold, and the tour happens whether rain or shine, so make sure you are dressed appropriately. This is a great walk and although there were some hills, it is suitable for a wide range of age groups.
Don’t be late. Make sure you arrive 10 minutes before your tour time to find your group. Lastly, tip your tour guide. The tour guides are great and can really read the crowd to give you the best experience, so tip your tour guide.
You can also take longer ones (up to 3 hours) and special themed Halloween and holiday tours.
