Socktober!

Socktober

Socktober is here!

Socktober MontrealAccording to Raising the Roof, each year approximately 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness. Those you see living on the streets or in their cars may not be who you think. The fastest growing homeless demographic is families with children with homeless youth rising too. There are also the ‘hidden’ homeless who are staying with friends or family or may have a house or apartment but cannot afford food or clothing.

YOU CAN DO SOMETHING TO HELP

Take part in Socktober.

Socktober is a campaign that started small and is growing. It’s easy to take part in or start your own campaign. Here’s how you can get involved.

STEP 1. START A NEIGHBORHOOD SOCK DRIVE

Start a NEW sock drive! Or gather other basic essentials/toiletries for your local shelter like hats, mitts, scarves as they prepare for winter. Need to find a local shelter? Check with your local community center, church, fire station or police department and they should be able to provide you with associations.

STEP 2. GET YOUR FRIENDS INVOLVED!

This is a great project to do as a family, with your school or community group, at your work or with your neighbors. Set a goal. Pick a deadline and make it happen! My daughters class at school got the entire school involved in donating and collecting socks!

STEP 3. SPREAD THE WORD!

Share your community’s story using hashtag #socktober on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Share inspiring stories of kindness and giving back all month!

STEP 4. DONATE THE SOCKS!

Collect socks all month and when your sock drive is done, take the new socks and other items you’ve collected to your local shelter.

STEP 5. SHARE YOUR STORY!

Film yourself or take photos of you dropping off the sock box and share the video on social media with the hashtag #socktober or email it to socktober@soulpancake.com.
