Growing up in Newfoundland I was accustomed to seeing moose, foxes, deer and various wildlife on a daily basis. It wasn’t that I would go look for them, everywhere you went in Newfoundland you are ‘in the wild’. Now I live in a city and don’t get to the wilderness as often. So this summer we decided to spend more time in the wild. My daughter began wondering is she will see a bear or a wolf or other wild animals. As we prepared for a hike I realized, although highly unlikely,  I had no idea what to do if I were to come across a wolf. This brought me to creating a story for Family Fun Canada to share everything I learned about ‘Canada Wild: What to do When You Come Across a Wild Animal while Camping or Hiking.

Some of the best places to experience Canada’s beauty can be found in Canada’s 39 National Parks and eight National Park Reserves encompassing prairies, coastlines and frozen peaks.  These are only a small fraction of Canada’s immense 10 million square kilometres landmass of incomparable natural beauty and landscapes.

If venturing into Canada’s wild you are sure to see smaller wildlife like squirrels,  chipmunks and deer. Although it is unlikely you will encounter a dangerous wild animal while camping it’s not impossible. Whether for a few hours or a week, preparation is important. Make sure you have adequate clothing and supplies and be aware of what animals may be living in your area – Parks Canada has many resources available for the numerous wilderness areas in Canada.

As they say, the best thing to do for a wild animal encounter is to never have one. If you do happen to come across some of Canada’s wild animals while exploring, read the full story on what to do here.
